Cetaceans are marine animals that include porpoises, dolphins, and whales. The term cetacean was derived from the Latin word Cetus which means “large sea animal”.

Although these creatures thrive in the sea, they are in fact mammals. They have bodies that are highly adaptable to aquatic life. Apart from this, they are well regarded for their unique behavior and high intelligence. Here are some more info about cetacean species:

  • Cetaceans have a thick layer of fat called blubber that insulates them.
  • The largest cetacean is the Blue Whale. It measures up to 33 meters and has a weight of 200 tons. It is commonly found in the Indian and South Pacific Ocean.
  • Although cetaceans mostly live in seas, some species thrive in freshwater. This includes freshwater dolphins and porpoises.
  • Whales, dolphins, and porpoise commonly use echolocation wherein they produce sounds to locate and prevent prey.
  • The hippopotamus is a close relative of the cetaceans.
  • As mammals, cetaceans breathe through their lungs. They usually do this by coming near the water surface to inhale warm oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
  • Cetaceans also produce milk. They feed their young through suckling.
